There's more of a resemblance with the original euro headlamps.

(And it's petty much just the lamps that have the resemblance.)

The headlights can be changed out easily enough. Parts are still readily available in the UK due to the following these cars are getting.

The US units look just like the ones on my old '73 Saab 99, just flipped upside down.

They may well have been. IIRC, Saab and Volvo both used to source a very large percentage of their components from UK suppliers too (Volvo even used to brag about it in British-market ads).

That, and US-legal sealed beams basically came in two flavors, round and rectangle.

Heh, I used to own an SD1, and the parts availability is amazing – definitely better than any other '70s-'80s British car. After they wound up production in Britain, they sold the tooling and a bunch of parts to an Indian company, who built it as the Standard 2000. That venture didn't work out (swapping out the V8 for an 83hp four probably didn't help), and the parts ended up sitting around in a warehouse for years.

A few years ago, a parts supplier in the UK bought everything up, so you can get everything from interior trim to whole bodyshells, all new-old-stock. Between that and the fact that the Rover V8 is the Chevy small-block of the British car world, you can get pretty much anything you need. Parts specific to LHD cars and pre-facelift models like that one are a bit harder to come by, but still amazingly plentiful.

At least in the rest-of-the-world market, the combination of the V8 and manual transmission is rare on the SD1. Most of them got a GM-built three-speed automatic that was more commonly fitted to the Grumman LLV postal vehicle.
